How Do Saniflo Up Flush Toilets Work?

How Do Saniflo Up Flush Toilets Work?

Spoiler: it’s not magic, but it’s pretty close. Yes, you can install a toilet under the stairs/in the closet/in the attic with this revolutionary product!

Adding a new toilet to any room in your home can seem like an impossible feat. Not only is it necessary to break floors and install complex plumbing, but you’ll also have to find a way to connect your new bathroom plumbing to your current main drainpipe, which may be too far away.

Saniflo Sanibest Pro Toilet with Grinder Series Pump
Saniflo Sanibest Pro Toilet with Grinder Series Pump

While you may think that adding a new bathroom to a tricky space will never happen, there’s an easy and affordable way to get around bathroom plumbing problems: Saniflo. Saniflo products are innovative, inexpensive, and guaranteed to make installing any toilet system a snap. Saniflo has been manufacturing upflush toilets for many years and is a subsidiary of French multinational company that was formed in the 1950’s

The Saniflo toilet system is unlike any other bathroom pumping system on the market. Instead of attempting to attach new plumbing to a main drainpipe that could be more than 100 feet away, Saniflo’s macerator does all of this work for you. How? Not only can Saniflo’s macerator send waste up to 150 feet away, but it can also send waste up towards any main drainpipe – up to 18 feet—thanks to Saniflo’s unique up flush toilet. No other water pumping system can do these things, which is why Saniflo is quickly becoming the most popular choice around the globe.

Of course, installing a Saniflo system is just one part of creating a functional, long-lasting bathroom—once your toilet is up and running, maintaining what happens after the flush is just as important. Whether you’re using a traditional system or a macerating toilet like Saniflo, proper care of your septic setup is essential to avoid future issues. That’s where regular septic tank maintenance comes in.

Over time, waste buildup and sludge accumulation can reduce the efficiency of your system and lead to unpleasant backups or even costly repairs. To keep everything flowing smoothly, scheduling routine cleaning and pumping of your septic tank is a smart move that protects both your investment and your household’s health. Professional services ensure your system remains in optimal condition and help prevent blockages that could interfere with newer plumbing additions. Just like Saniflo takes the guesswork out of installation, working with a reliable septic expert ensures you don’t have to worry about what happens below the surface.

How does Saniflo work? The process is really simple. First, when waste is flushed a patented macerating device inside of the tank activates. Within a matter of four seconds, the waste inside of the tank is completely pulverized. Then, the waste is pumped into a septic or soil stack up to 150 feet away. When the process has been completed, the macerating device inside of the tank is deactivated. As soon as the toilet is refilled with water, the tank is clean and empty.

The best part about Saniflo is that you don’t need major construction in order to install this unit – in fact, you can install it on your own in most cases. Since waste is flushed through a pipe that measures a mere one inch in diameter, there’s no need for serious construction. Customers who purchase a Saniflo pumping system do so in order to add en-suite bathrooms, basement toilets, garage installations, toilets for elderly family members, and many other practical toilets that could not be added through conventional methods.

No matter where you need a toilet, you can add one with the help of Saniflo toilet systems. Even if you’ve been told that you can’t add a toilet to your home due to the fact that your main drainpipe is too far away for a normal toilet system, you can bet that Saniflo will work. Thanks to this innovative product, no new toilet addition is impossible.

You’ll also be happy to note that our macerating pumps, gray water pumps, and toilet systems are entirely environmentally friendly, since they use far less water than any regular system. Saniflo’s macerating systems last more than 50,000 flushes (10 flushes per day), and all Saniflo gray water pumps come with a 2 year warranty. When it comes to installing a toilet system that won’t break the bank or the floors in your home, nothing beats Saniflo.

Waiting for the catch? There isn’t one. Even the installation is relatively simple! Wondering how to install a Saniflo upflush toilet? For those ambitious (and experienced) DIYers, click here to find your Saniflo upflush toilet installation instructions (but don’t attempt this alone without sufficient plumbing knowledge; if you’re a novice, this is a job best left to your plumber). And once it’s in, all you have to do is enjoy the convenience of another toilet where you never thought you’d be able to put one!

I have a Saniflo toilet installed downstairs in my semidetached property. Is it normal to have the system working at times for about 5-10 mins. even without using or flushing the toilet? The noise is an annoyance.

Hello, I am hoping to add a toilet to the a guest cottage on my property. The cottage has electricity but no running water. We are looking to only add a toilet, however, are hoping to not have to incorporate adding running water in to the project. Reading through your site and am unsure still if these toilets can be installed without a hookup to a running water source? Also-do they require eventual hookup to the ‘main house’ line to the septic tank? In other words, what is the ‘end goal/location’ of the waste? Thanks for your insight!

Hi Dan, Josh, a member of our sales team who’s an expert on the topic, contacted Saniflo for you. They recommend using a separate pump for each toilet bowl. However, it has been done using a “Y” shaped pipe. A better option for this application would be the Sanicubic1 model pump: https://www.qualitybath.com/saniflo-089-sanicubic1-above-floor-simplex-grinder-pump-product-145634.htm Hope this helps! If you need any other assistance feel free to give us a call at 800-554-3210.

Hi, I want to install a toilet in my log cabin at the back of my garden about 120ft from the house. The house is slightly downhill from the log cabin. I would be happy for the toilet to be one that paper cannot be flushed down and that is used for No 1’s not No 2’s! Is it doable and which Saniflo would I need?

I would like to install the Saniflo into my garage. I am on septic but the garage is a lower level than the septic tanks which means that the pipes from the Saniflo would run up hill. Will this be a problem?

Hi Carol, I believe that it shouldn’t be a problem but double-check with your plumber or installer to be sure. Good luck and enjoy your Saniflo!

I am interested in installing a toilet in my garage and these units look like they would fit the bill. I live in an upstairs condo with the living space over the top of my garage. The plumbing for my upstairs laundry actually pipes over and into the neighbor’s garage. It’s just the way these units were built. I have no existing plumbing into my own garage. So do I need at least a sink already down there for one of these toilets to work?

Hi Donna, it sounds like the Saniflo would work well for your space. Try calling a local plumber to see if it’s feasible. Good luck!

My husband has had a stroke and is unlikely to be able to get upstairs for the loo when he comes home from hospital. We have a space in the hall where possibly a Saniflo loo could be installed. I need an engineer/plumber to come and have a look to see if it can be done please.

Can anyone help. We have a saniflow installed for the first time. We have a sink and a toilet connected, however we have filled the sink with water and then pulled out the plug, we have done this 3 times but the pump hasn’t kicked in. Are we doing something obviously stupid.

yaelSeptember 14, 2014 at 10:08 pm
Hi John, did you have the Saniflo professionally installed? Why is it connected to the sink? Sounds like you’ll need a plumber to look at it.

I just moved into a flat with a saniflo and its a nightmare. Not only are you very limited of how much paper you can use as it can block but ive used my apparent new saniflo for the last 2 weeks very responsibly and when it flushes the blades are so powerful and noisy it literally rocks things, the whole bathroom floor vibrates and the toilet moves. It goes off on its own, its just a matter of time before the whole thing blows open. Terrible product.

We’re thinking of converting part of our garage into a utility and a small downstairs toilet. We’ve had 2 builders round to quote on the work and have been advised by both that we cannot have a toilet there as our drains are too deep. I asked about saniflo and was advised that this would also require a lot of work as the kitchen floor (kitchen is behind garage)would need taking up for the pipework to be fitted which would also mean more expense. I can’t get my head around this as my understanding was that you can fit saniflo easily anywhere. The builders came highly recommended and seemed to know what they were talking about but I’m completely baffled!!!!

A nice choice of your toilet will also a big help to establish your bathroom. Most toilets are one of the major cause of problems in our bathroom.

We have an older building where this would be perfect. We had to do a project at one of our panama city beach condos a few years ago. I wish I had this system. We practically had to rebuild the unit in order to get the bathroom in. Thanks for the info.

The Saniflo brand are the best Macerators on the market, there are other brands but they are noisey, difficult to repair and are not as the same standard as a Saniflo Macerator. The Saniflo’s are easy to fix if they go wrong, providing they are installed correctly and have sufficient access.

What a brilliant concept! Kind of makes you think that every toilet should work this way, even if normal plumbing access is avaialble. It’s sanitary and pretty efficient.

I am a independent engineer and I work on most makes of macerators, yes there are some copycat makes, and I would agree that the saniflo range of macerators are by far the best on the market, some of the other make even use plastic blades, to me thats ridiculouse, but as far as I know all the saniflo range use stainless steel blades, and the simplisity of construction makes them very unlikely to break down if you use them correctly
