Technically you can just a bit. The problem will be with the opening. As a 56" you would have a 23-1/2 opening. As you narrow the overall dimensions the opening gets smaller making it more difficult to enter and exit the shower.

This shower door is the bomb! it really has added a nice touch to my remodeled bathroom!
I bought this door to finish up a bathroom remodel. My guest bath is small and I wanted to allow as much light as possible into the shower. I was considering going with one from a big box store--it was cheaper and looked like it might work. I'm do glad I didn't! This piece is beautiful--it arrived on schedule and in perfect condition. The glass is heavier than the other ones I was looking at and it rolls smoothly. The installation was quick (less than an hour). The attached photo was right after install (and before towels and whatnot were put in, so forgive the blinding whiteness), but I hope it shows you how well it matches with other bronze fixtures. I had a quick question and ended up calling customer service. I spoke with Vicky, who was super helpful and followed up with me when she had to look up an answer. I'm very happy with this purchase and with QualityBath!
I could not be happier with this purchase. I purchased these for a bathroom remodel. I used oil rubbed bronze fixtures throughout the bathroom but when I went to the local big box store for doors all they had was nickel or silver. I went to the other big box store and they had oil rubbed bronze that I could order and would have in a month for a much higher price. I was a little apprehensive when I ordered them because they were priced better than anywhere else and I've never ordered from this merchant before. I ordered them on Sunday and received them on Thursday. The timing was perfect because the contractor was able to install them on Friday. The quality is excellent, they are strong and sturdy and they look beautiful in my new bathroom.
