There are primary categories of tub drains, with different ways to open and shut the drain:
Lift and turn drains are secured shut tightly when screwed in. In order to open the lift and turn tub drain, you need to unscrew it by hand.
Plug and chain bathtub drain plug is controlled the old fashioned way, and feature a traditional/vintage design look. The waste drain is connected to the overflow with a thin chain, which you lift when you want the water to drain.
Toe tap, or toe control, tub drains are very convenient. They can be secured shut by pressing down with your toe, and then popped up by toe too when you want the water to drain.
Cable operated bath tub drains feature a cable that stretches from the overflow to the waste drain. You turn the overflow mechanism to open and shut drain.
Trip lever bathtub drains feature a lever at the overflow, through which you can open and shut the drain.
