Q:When you decide the handing of a door handle, you are standing on the outside of the door, meaning you can lock/unlock from the other side/the inside, correct? For example, for a left hand door, the hinge in the on the left, the door opens away from you, and the door handle locks/unlocks on the other side of the door.

That is correct. Here is a quick guide that explains it very simply. RIGHT OR LEFT HANDING? To determine the handing of your door: Stand at the exterior side of the door in question, facing towards the inside. Take note of which side of the door the hinges are on. If the hinges are on the left side, then the door and the hardware should be left handed. If the hinges are on the right side, then the door and the hardware should be right handed.
