How to Measure the Base Cabinet for your Kitchen Sink

How to Measure the Base Cabinet for your Kitchen Sink

Ready for a new kitchen sink? One of the most important measurements you’ll need to know is your sink base-cabinet size. Read this step-by-step guide and get it right the first time.

It’s one of the first decisions you’ll need to make when choosing a kitchen sink, and one of the most technical (and possibly one of the more confusing ones): sink size.

To expound on one of the more complex aspects of sink sizing – how to get the most accurate measurements and find out what size sink your kitchen can accommodate – we’ve broken down the process piece by piece so that you can make an informed, confident decision.

The kitchen sink base cabinet firmly determines your maximum sink size, so you’ll need to know exactly how big that cabinet is before shopping for a kitchen sink.

Standard sink base cabinets are 24″ deep (back to front), and most sinks are designed to fit that size. However, widths vary widely and sink widths vary accordingly.

All you need is the cabinet in question and a tape measure!

To measure your sink base cabinet:

  1. Empty the cabinet completely for maximum accuracy and ease of measurement (sink base cabinets should not have drawers or shelves at all to accommodate plumbing).
  2. First, measure the total depth of your cabinet, including the frame. (It will likely be 24″, but some cabinets may be irregularly sized.) Lay the tape measure along the bottom of the cabinet; place the end against the back of the cabinet, then pull out the tape until the front edge of the cabinet to find the front-to-back (depth) measurement.
  3. Next, measure the total outer width of your cabinet. Lay the tape measure along the bottom of the cabinet from the left edge to the right edge.
    • Note: you need to measure the total overall dimensions – not the interior dimensions – because that’s the industry standard; sink manufacturers use full dimensions when determining the necessary base cabinet size (so if the manufacturer’s description says that the sink requires a 30″ base cabinet, the measurement refers to the total size rather than interior size.)
    • Note: check your cabinet for any braces or additional supports that may decrease the width where the sink will be.
  4. Subtract 3 to 4 inches from the overall (exterior) width measurement and 1 inch from the depth to calculate your maximum sink width. (Many sink manufacturers will include a minimum cabinet size requirement in the product description; check any potential sinks for that information.)
    • Note: for fireclay sinks, allow for 2% variation in size as actual sink size may vary. Because fireclay sinks are installed on a shelf-like support, you don’t need to account for the additional 1″ of depth or 3″-4″ of width; the sink sits directly atop the cabinet, so the only variation you need to take into account is the 2% fluctuation.
    • Note: for drop-in sinks, measure the interior width of the sink at the top (widest part) of the sink and apply the same 3″-4″ rule when determining base cabinet size.

While you may technically be able to cut the cabinet slightly to fit in a bigger sink, it’s not recommended: it may void the cabinet warranty (check with your manufacturer or installer), weakens the support for the countertop, and permanently damages the cabinets.

Sink base cabinets are available in virtually any width, especially if you choose custom cabinetry. The most common widths – and the sink widths they can accommodate – are:
