Beauty, grace, comfort, and practicality… all in one breathtaking bathtub. The slipper tub has been a favorite fixture for over a century, here's why...
Every freestanding tub is a focal point, a bathroom centerpiece, a thing of beauty. Some are more alluring than others. Case in point: the slipper bath.
Slipper tubs are popular due to their beautifully alluring shape, comfortable interior, and vintage charm (though available in modern silhouettes as well).

What is a slipper tub?
Slipper tubs were created in the late 19th century. During the Victorian era, they were used in public bathhouses to shield the bathers from view and were also installed in the private homes of the wealthy. The tub is vaguely shoe-shaped (visualize a high-heeled shoe), earning its name.
A slipper bath tub features one or two raised, sloping ends, designed to cradle the bather in a naturally comfortable position. The tubs are ergonomically shaped and have a charming appearance.
What is a double slipper tub?
A single slipper tub has one raised end; a double slipper has two. The double slipper tub offers a symmetrical silhouette and comfortable positioning at either end of the tub, depending on the bather’s comfort; it can also hold two bathers simultaneously in an ergonomic position.

Are slipper tubs comfortable?
Slipper tubs are designed and sculpted to support the bather’s back, neck, and head in a naturally comfortable position, with the sides acting as armrests and the ends as backrests. They allow the bather to remain in a comfortably reclined position with the majority of the body under the water’s surface.
How big is a slipper tub?
Most slipper tubs are large for ultimate comfort, but compact tubs are also readily available. Tub measurements range in length from 30” to 80”, in width from 19” to 67”, and in depth up to 36”.
Before choosing a tub, consider the size of your bathroom (you’ll need 3-6 inches on each side, and you don’t want it to overwhelm the room) and measure all doors, stairwells, and hallways that the tub will need to pass through on its journey to your bathroom.
If you enjoy soaking with a partner, go for a double slipper tub, an extra-long tub, or an extra-wide tub to comfortably accommodate both bathers.

What shape is a slipper tub?
While all slipper tubs have the classic slipper shape, most are oval or hourglass-shaped, though a contemporary slipper tub may be rectangular or squared off at one or both ends.
What styles do slipper tubs come in?
Slipper tubs are commonly classically styled; the slipper clawfoot tub is a popular choice. While traditional tubs – clawfoot, roll top, vintage – are most popular, slipper tubs are also available in more contemporary styles. They may rest atop a pedestal, modern-styled feet, or directly on the floor, and are available in sleek, minimalist styles as well.

What colors and materials do slipper tubs come in?
Slipper bathtubs are available in many colors and finishes beyond the classic white. A cast iron slipper bath retains heat and is reminiscent of original models; an acrylic slipper tub is a more lightweight and affordable option. To make a truly dramatic statement, try a luxurious copper slipper bath. These gorgeous (and trendy!) tubs are also available in other assorted materials, including metal, stone, solid surface, and stainless steel.
How do you install a slipper tub?
Like all freestanding tubs, slipper tubs are often heavy and may require extra reinforcement underneath the floor.
On a single slipper tub, place the faucet and drain at the lower end of the tub. On a double slipper tub, the fixtures are placed in the center.

What features can a slipper tub have?
Most slipper tubs are quite streamlined and simple, with the contours built into the shape. They’re also most commonly soaking tubs, though some may be equipped with air jets for a relaxing, effervescent effect. Many offer additional features like pillows for enhanced comfort.
How much does a slipper tub cost?
Prices vary widely due to several factors such as size, material, system, and brand. They range from under $900 to over $35,000!
