Soaking Tubs: Everything You Need to Know

Soak up the luxury of the perfect soaking tub. Here’s how to find your new end-of-the-day oasis. Get ready to say goodbye to your stresses!

Who doesn’t love settling into a steaming tub – glass of wine optional but recommended – at the end of a long, tough day?

(Nobody that we know, at least.)

For those who prefer their bathing experience without frills (namely, bubbles or water jets) – just pure, unadulterated relaxation – a soaking tub (AKA soaker tub) provides that in-home escape.

What is a soaking tub?

A soaking tub does just what its name suggests: provides you with a place to soak. These tubs are typically deep and/or contoured for a soothing, comfortable bathing experience.

What is the size of a soaking tub?

There is no “standard size” of soaking bathtub – however, generally, many soaking tubs are shorter length-wise than other types of tubs (thought they are deeper). Soaking tubs range from a compact 54” to a whopping 90” or more in length; widths vary from a slim 19” to an oversized 76” (to comfortably hold two bathers, even those on the larger side).

Because soaking tubs are available in so many configurations, mounts, and sizes, there’s a tub to fit virtually every bathroom.

How deep is a soaking tub?

Soaking tubs are designed for long, comfortable soaks, so they’re deeper than the typical tub. Standard tub depths allow for approximately 12” of water; soaking tubs should offer at least 14” or more so that the water covers the majority of the bather’s body.

To determine water depth, measure the tub from the bottom (interior) to the overflow drain. An overflow drain is an additional drain on the side of the tub, designed to prevent the tub from overflowing in case of a clog, leak, or overfilling.

If any users have physical limitations, consider a shallower tub or a set of steps to allow for easier, safer access.

What is a Japanese soaking tub?

A Japanese tub is an extra deep soaking tub with a compact footprint, allowing the bather to sit comfortably – with most of his or her body in the water, in a mostly upright position – without taking up a lot of space in the bathroom. These tubs are typically square or round (but also available in other geometric and freeform shapes) and equipped with a seat inside. Japanese soaker tubs can be sunken for easy access; a floor mounted Japanese tub may require a step (or set of steps) for easy access.

The high sides of a Japanese tub may make it impractical for bathing children or those with mobility issues, so consider all needs before choosing your tub and its installation.

What are the installation options for a soaking tub?

Soaker bathtubs are available in virtually any configuration, shape, and mount. The terms you may encounter on your search include:

Installation

  • Drop-in bathtub: this type of tub (also known as overmount or deck mount) is “dropped in” to a tub surround, with the top of the tub attached to the top of the surround
  • Undermount tub: these tubs are attached to the surround from the underside, with a counter-like deck covering the top edge of the tub (some tubs may be mounted over or under)
  • Corner tub: depending on your bathroom layout, this tub configuration may offer the most bathing space possible
  • Alcove tub: the best option for a tub/shower combo, alcove tubs attach to the wall on three sides
  • Freestanding tub: these statement-making tubs stand on the floor, unattached to the wall
  • Walk-in tub: these tubs feature a swing-out door for easy access for those with physical impairments or difficulty climbing in and out

Shape

  • Round
  • Square
  • Rectangular
  • Oval
  • Slipper or double slipper: a tub that is raised on one or both ends for comfortable, ergonomic positioning in the tub
  • Hourglass
  • Clawfoot: a freestanding tub resting on decorative feet

What are the finish and material options for a soaking tub?

Soaking tubs can be found in virtually every tub material:

  • Acrylic: lightweight, low-maintenance, and largely affordable, acrylic tubs are a popular choice
  • Cast iron: reminiscent of original and vintage tubs, cast iron tubs are durable and heavy, often with several color options
  • Copper: a copper tub is an ultimate luxury, elegant, opulent, and strikingly beautiful
  • Stainless steel: a more affordable metal, stainless steel is a great alternative to copper
  • Stone: natural stone tubs are spectacular – and spectacularly heavy, so reinforce your floor
  • Solid surface: crafted of manmade resin, solid surface tubs (like Perlato’s Lapistone™) are smooth, sturdy, and lightweight
  • Other materials: tubs can be clad in virtually any material, including interesting options like leather and glass; they can also be made out of unusual materials like concrete and marine-grade wood

Do soaking tubs require special plumbing?

Standard plumbing is appropriate for soaking tubs; they do not require additional pumps or special installation beyond the drainage line and hot and cold lines.

What special features can a soaking tub have?

As if a nice hot soak wasn’t relaxing enough… soaking tubs can also be outfitted with features to make your bath extra-special. Deck yours out with pillows, shelves, armrests, mood lighting (AKA chromatherapy lighting), aromatherapy system, a heater to keep the water warm, and even a sound system. You’ll never want to get out!

Bain Ultra, soaking tub manufacturer extraordinaire, offers a variety of special features to enhance bath time – and they’re not alone. Many bathtub manufacturers provide optional specialty features on their tubs. Choose from one or a combination of several:

  • Thermotherapy: a dry (low-humidity) therapeutic heat system that improves oxygen flow and boosts nutrients in the blood
  • Chromatherapy: a scientifically-proven technique with six-color light system to effectively treat bodily ailments and improve mental and physical health
  • Light therapy: for energy and hormone balance, which improves sleep, mood, and concentration
  • Aromatherapy: the release of an essential oil-infused mist to promote healing and affect mood
  • Sound therapy: using music at various frequencies and wavelengths to stabilize mood and reduce stress

Who knew a bath could do so much?

Some soaking tubs actually have jets, which may seem like an oxymoron, but they’re classified as soaking tubs due to their depth and contours. Not sure about the differences? Check out our guide to the different types of tubs as well as our whirlpool vs. air tub guide.
